Cheer Up! - ARC - By Crystal Frasier

Updated: May 10, 2021

Spoiler-Free Synopsis

Annie is a smart, antisocial lesbian starting her senior year of high school who’s under pressure to join the cheerleader squad to make friends and round out her college applications. Her former friend BeeBee is a people-pleaser—a trans girl who must keep her parents happy with her grades and social life to keep their support of her transition. Through the rigors of squad training and amped up social pressures (not to mention micro aggressions and other queer youth problems), the two girls rekindle a friendship they thought they’d lost and discover there may be other, sweeter feelings springing up between them.

MY REVIEW

Thank You So Much NetGalley and Oni Press for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a quick, adorable graphic novel in which will keep your attention throughout the whole book. I really did enjoy this. It had an amazing plot, and the struggles BeeBee had to go through made it where Annie would NEED a reason to speak to her, or support her. Although the plot was good, and wasn't fast-paced as many young adult graphic novels are, the beginning was alittle too - rebellish - if that makes sense. But it does give the characters different reasonings to communicate; Annie needs to make the team to get to college, and BeeBee needs a genuine friend, although it is SO clear they became alittle more than that. But either way, this book was really good and grabbed my attention: As soon as I picked it up. So although it is small, it has a very good plot, that I really do think everyone will enjoy.
