Dangerous Play by Emma Kress

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

Spoiler-Free Synopsis

Zoe Alamandar has one goal: win the State Field Hockey Championships and earn a scholarship that will get her the hell out of Central New York. She and her co-captain Ava Cervantes have assembled a fierce team of dedicated girls who will work hard and play by the rules.

But after Zoe is sexually assaulted at a party, she finds a new goal: make sure no girl feels unsafe again. Zoe and her teammates decide to stop playing by the rules and take justice into their own hands. Soon, their suburban town has a team of superheroes meting out punishments, but one night of vigilantism may cost Zoe her team, the championship, her scholarship, and her future.

Perfect for fans who loved the female friendships of Jennifer Mathieu’s Moxie and the bite of Courtney Summer’s Sadie.

MY REVIEW:

I LOVED this!! I officially believe this is now a new favorite.

Throughout the whole book, it kept me well-rounded. I never wanted to put the book down.

Eden is a Fockey player. One that is determined on getting into her dream college. She works hard, and is determined to be the best captain ever lived. But soon enough- something throws her off. She went to Reilly- a jerkface football player- 's party. All went well. She interacts with someone she always wanted to talk to. But suddenly, the world stops. She finds herself minutes later trapped in a situation no one wants to be in- pounded between a wall and a guy she does not want to interact with. He assaults her aggressively. Unsnaps her bra, shoves her, keeps her kicked against the wall. Fortunately, someone calls her name and she breaks free. But this doesn't stop her from feeling bad. After this experience, she has one goal- Never make a girl feel that way. Again. She finds herself noticing all of the small details guys do they she hadnt seen before. The way Lance looks at every girls breasts as they walk by. Or the way guys grab girls butts as if it were theirs to claim. It all ticks her off. And she does something that can definitely scar her future.

In my personal opinion- which a ton of people who've read this already can probably agree with me on- SHE HANDLED HER REVENGE THE WRONG WAY!! Seriously, Zoe (hehe, what a coincidence) you need to get a grip. I understand you're all in the moment, but that could've gone HORRIBLY wrong!!

A gun . . . "Of course, it won't be loaded. We'll be totally safe."

This book has her mental state before, and not all perfect. Behind the screen, she's already struggling with things at home. Her dad lost his full ability to walk, and her mother stays out late every night, causing her to believe the wrong things and come to hate her. I love that. Well, not really, but you know what I'm trying to put out there. I love that Kress made it where her life wasn't all perfect and amazing before the assault. Because it wasn't. She had her setbacks.

OVERALL,

I give this a rating of 5 trees (get it, cause it's the Christmas/Winter season?) This had an amazing impact on me, and I loved it. Definitely recommend!! <33
