Spoiler-Free Synopsis
When Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves embark upon a dangerous quest to reclaim the hoard of gold stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug, Gandalf the wizard suggests an unlikely accomplice: Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming Hobbit dwelling in peaceful Hobbiton.
Along the way, the company faces trolls, goblins, giant spiders, and worse. But as they journey from the wonders of Rivendell to the terrors of Mirkwood and beyond, Bilbo will find that there is more to him than anyone--himself included--ever dreamed. Unexpected qualities of courage and cunning, and a love of adventure, propel Bilbo toward his great destiny...a destiny that waits in the dark caverns beneath the Misty Mountains, where a twisted creature known as Gollum jealously guards a precious magic ring.
MY REVIEW
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”
I don't know why I gave 3 stars.
I mean, it was good, so why not? When I mean good, I mean, good enough to hold action....
The first chapter did not catch my attention, I'm not even gonna lie. It seemed very uninteresting, but I continued reading because who judges a book based off the first chapter? The first chapter is like the first episode of a show. Of course it's not gonna be good. I mean, cause it's a random person coming into a guy's house (hobbit hole, may i correct!) with him having no idea why.
The next few chapters, actually kind held me in. Which is where the first star came from. It had action, and even and the downfalls, I kinda wanted to read ahead. (i did, btw, hehe) It's realll easy for me to slip up and say spoilers, so I'm gonna be as cautious as I can with this. It was entertaining while reading their journey. I actually read ahead, thats how good it was.
But where's the slight warning? What are you talking about, zozo, what needs a warning? Well, it's a slur in this book, in which the teacher did not expect (nor said) but still, this needs at least some kind of warning. Like by the publisher or something. And it's not like a racial slur or anything, it's just something unsettling. (the f slur...) And it's not anything you'd want to read to a class on accident, or come across. But I'm not like others, so that doesn't affect my rating. (maybe)
The middle chapters.... Sadly, this is where my rating began to plummet. It began to get boring, and uninteresting. I have no idea if this is because i read my own personal book at the same time as reading this class book, but tbh it began to disinterest me. I tried my best to continue reading ahead, but my mind just wouldn't let me. I stayed on the same page, but not interested. At. All.
So now that we know the bad parts of the book (the ones that affected my rating) why not know that ones that are good, and that kept it from being a one star?
Well, GOLLUM!
I. LOVE. HIM. He is my favorite character, and will forever be. We also watched part of the movie, so that's interesting. He looks like my cousin. (srry cuzzo!) But anyway, He is my favorite. He looks strange, which is the best part about him. His voice is distorted, another good weird, strange, disturbing thing that made him my favorite. But he seems very.. whats the word? Stubborn. He constantly pressured Bilbo into answering, and not in a good way. OKAY I understand. That's the goal, to win the game- oops, spoilers- anyway. Gollum is my favorite. i love him, lol.
Bilbo, oh my dearest BILBO. He is me. Like 100%. But isn't he all of us? He didn't want to go on the journey, nor wanted to enjoy it, but he ended up having alittle fun. I mean, parents constantly tell us kids we're gonna enjoy something, we say we won't but we do. OH COME ON. It happens alot, and that what makes this a three star. Somewhat relatable.
But I'm done with my review because; 1. I have no other things to state. And 2; I might end up spoiling the book if I do continue typing anything else. But I gave it a chance, and might end up giving it another around the month of June, when I'm not forced to read this :)
