TW: MENTIONS OF RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT

Spoiler-Free Synopsis

Three misfits come together to avenge the rape of a fellow classmate and in the process trigger a change in the misogynist culture at their high school transforming the lives of everyone around them in this searing and timely story.

Who are the Nowhere Girls?

They’re everygirl. But they start with just three:

Grace Salter is the new girl in town, whose family was run out of their former community after her southern Baptist preacher mom turned into a radical liberal after falling off a horse and bumping her head.

Rosina Suarez is the queer punk girl in a conservative Mexican immigrant family, who dreams of a life playing music instead of babysitting her gaggle of cousins and waitressing at her uncle’s restaurant.

Erin Delillo is obsessed with two things: marine biology and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but they aren’t enough to distract her from her suspicion that she may in fact be an android.

When Grace learns that Lucy Moynihan, the former occupant of her new home, was run out of town for having accused the popular guys at school of gang rape, she’s incensed that Lucy never had justice. For their own personal reasons, Rosina and Erin feel equally deeply about Lucy’s tragedy, so they form an anonymous group of girls at Prescott High to resist the sexist culture at their school, which includes boycotting sex of any kind with the male students.

Told in alternating perspectives, this groundbreaking novel is an indictment of rape culture and explores with bold honesty the deepest questions about teen girls and sexuality.

MY REVIEW

THIS. IS IS AMAZING.

-

Third person isn't much of my jingo jango, but this book seems to be making me LOVE IT.

We firstly meet Grace. She's new to town, and she's used to being the invisible, quiet girl that no one acknowledges, or even speaks to. And she was fine with that. Until she learns the story of a young girl named Lucy Moynihan.

Lucy Moynihan was a young, 16 year old girl who went to a party for fun, but it soon turned into something that became torturous: Spencer Klimpt, Eric Jordan, and Ennis Calhoun raped her. Not only raped her, but beat her up as well. She woke up tied to a chair, vomit all over her shirt. To make things worse; No one believes her. Not the teachers, Not the police, and what sucks the worse is: Not even her parents.

When Grace finds out about this story, she decides to do something about it.

". . . We declare that the women of Prescott High School are officially on sex strike. Make friends with your hands, boys."

WHEN I TELL YOU I LOVED THIS-

This is a book i feel like every single person; or at least feminist; should read. Throughout the book, we also see some posts from a blog one of the rapists; (Spencer); owns: The Real Men of Prescott. Not only is this website completely disgusting, but it's absolutely disturbing. The posts he uploads not only stories of the girls he's hooked up with, but the way he captured them. He also provides us with TECHNIQUES ON HOW TO RAPE THEM?!

Like, how messed up do you have to be to think that that is okay?! To make matters worse: Teachers and Officers called everything that he posted a joke, and laughed at them.

"'I don't have to hook up with you if I don't feel like it.' So then I was like, 'Then why are you wearing a skirt that's so short I can practically see your a**?' and she said, 'I can wear whatever I want.' and I said, 'Yeah, but if you wear something like that, you can't expect me to control myself.'"

Halfway through the book, we learn from Amber; One of Spencer's previous exes; that he was indeed abusive, and raped her himself. But she thought it was okay; because she's his girlfriend.

I really do love this book, and a five stars from me. I have notes in my journal on how i feel throughout this book, and information I feel was good to know about. I love the characters, the plot, and the conflict I experienced as I read. Really good, and now a favorite. I definitely recommend. <3
